After many hours, I’m glad this painting is closer to being finished 😊. It took so long because I added the light myself. I wanted to capture the golden hour with this warm, peaceful village. This place is real and located near me. If you know it, you know it; if not, now you do.

It was my pleasure to be involved, especially with one particular painting I inspired and created for the theme. The sunrise, sunset, and colors are always captivating to me, as they represent the shifting of time from the horizon.

One of the guests commented that the colorful brushwork felt like popping party confetti, while another mentioned that the front tree looked like a Christmas tree celebration. I was amazed by how people interpreted and connected with the painting. I absolutely enjoyed the evening, speaking with and meeting the guests, as well as other wonderful artists. I‘m also glad that this painting has found a new home.

To me, painting has always been a solo lonely practice. Whenever I get a chance, I meditate in front of my easel, losing track of time in an effort to push against it. I didn’t realize that group collaboration could be so much fun.

Earlier this month I did @studiotoursoma and wow thank you for the wonderful opportunity to connect with the audience—it feels powerful when art brings people together. Thanks to the organizers, my fellow artists, and all the visitors. I truly enjoyed the company! Also glad some of my paintings and prints found new homes.

I was so excited to see that my painting Hawk‘s Tavern was featured in the article about the @studiotoursoma in the fall 2024 issue of Matters magazine @mattersmagazine. (I will be showing at the 1978 Arts Center)

As a self-taught artist, I am thankful for our community‘s support. The SOMA studio tour provides great opportunities for artists to grow, really connect everyone and the community, and I am so glad to be a part of it.

I also painted quite a few about this area. I live here and see places every day; there is no better way to express my feelings than by painting them.

It’s the season of dahlia flowers, and they are in full bloom. From the buds to the blossoms and then to withering, they symbolize the cycle of vibrant vitality.

I intentionally included the dried dahlias in front of Namcha Barwa, a Himalayan mountain. They celebrate the great cycle of life and death.

I haven’t visited China in 10 years. When I was there, I didn’t find the Chinese garden very inspiring; it felt too calm for me, or maybe I was just used to that type of view. However, this summer, during a casual visit to the Montreal Botanical Garden, the Chinese garden truly struck me: the simple elements composed beautiful scenes. With every angle I observed and every step I took, the view changed, like unrolling a scroll of landscape painting—I felt as if I were inside a painting!

With just a pond, stones, trees, and architecture, it’s an ideal model of Chinese aesthetics, balancing harmony between humanity and nature.

It enlightened me, and I expressed this inspiration in my painting. It’s not finished yet; the beginning was fun, full of expression and freedom, with endless possibilities. Now I need to end it. I’ve paused for a few days to just stare at it.

On a rainy day, I was on the train back from the city. As it passed through South Orange, the road light turned green, and it was so bright against the gray backdrop. I snapped a couple of photos by the window and painted this painting. I added many green lights to emphasize it.

The kids are back in school, and I’ve started teaching a watercolor class; there are a couple of opening nights this fall as well. The weather is changing, and the shifting light is allowing me to paint more. I’m just so glad to be painting again and doing the things I love after the break.

Sound on! The best part of the plein-air painting is being surrounded by the nature. The light, the air, the sound of the water and animal, all spontaneous shaping the painters’ next decisions. All shades of greens can only been seen and felt on the site, nothing but our naked eyes. I had to paint two, one is more detailed, and one is more simple on a sketchbook.
